The GEMS philosophy is to have fun and to learn new things. We strive to expose the girls to ideas and experiences that they would not receive during the school day. We use higher-level subject matter and activities from publications such as Scientific American and Discover Magazine to challenge the girls and keep the interest level high.
Listed here are Web sites and activities that have been successful GEMS club activities. We generally work on a three-four year cycle, never repeating the same activity in two consecutive years.
The Disappearing Money Trick: While this seems like a magic trick, learn the engineering behind it.
The Magic Bottle: Another cool secret engineering trick from engineers, who know how to do very interesting things!
Oil slicks: Learn how oil slicks work and why they are so harmful.
Blowing Up Balloons: We use this and other activities for our “Carbonation Celebration.”
