GEMS Activities

Some of the activities completed during the years
include: exploring flight through launching rockets,
designing mazes, making paint from scratch,
growing crystals, developing and using codes, a
carbonation celebration, building bridges, using the
Lego hydraulics system, recycling paper, quality
control of diapers and M&M bags, building
zoetropes, learning strategy games, and making T-
shirts using chromatography.

In 2004, the GEMS club received a grant from
Girls
in Technology
, a subcommittee of Women in
Technology,  a metropolitan Washington, DC
organization, to purchase and use K’nex and Lego
robotics materials. These materials will be used to
encourage club members to develop and apply
engineering principles and approaches to problem-
solving that will serve them well in the future.

GEMS activities are found and created by Ms.
Jones and Ms Meier, the teachers. Many activities are
developed or adapted from activities found on the
many math/science Web sites available. Many of
these links are listed below. Other activities are
downloadable as PDF documents from this Web site.
